triciamonster I saw Black Magdalene live in 2018 at an outdoor festival. I was literally drawn to the stage by the vocals, like a siren song. This is music that reaches into your very core and seduces your soul with bewitching magic. Favorite track: Rusulka.

Khlysty 04:58
The soul belongs to God But unto us the body belongs Rentre fentre Speaking beyond their own reason Be fearful man before praying Kindra fendra Kiraveca The red sun has set Whirling in mysterious death Rentre fentre Second supreme baptism No salvation without sin Kindra fendra Kiraveca
2.
Matushka 02:42
In the dawn of my empire Sorrow's joy estranged from me Both eyes closed although awake Speak no more of yesterday спи мой возлюбленный (spi moy vozlyublenniy) мой прекрасный (moi prekrasnyi) Sleep my beloved My beautiful one In death blooms a reign of peace Your Matushka I will always be Close your eyes to the nightmares Love is a golden empire спи мой возлюбленный (spi moy vozlyublenniy) мой прекрасный (moi prekrasnyi) Sleep my beloved My beautiful one
3.
All that is perceived Merely shadows of the unseen Endlessly seeking paradise Kingdom beneath the white waters Ки́теж Unsung harmonies echo Buried within the clamour Forbidden invocations Kingdom beneath the white waters Ки́теж Rejecting this world In priestless immolation A new heaven on an old earth Kingdom beneath the white waters Ки́теж No patience for the apocalypse The Faithful would rather burn than surrender
4.
Rusulka 05:18
At the pinnacle of summer Amidst the willow and birch Ghost crone virgin Lost soul of a maiden She awaits Your cross your circles and wormwood Your incense and salt won't save you Before the time of Christ An unbaptized child She awaits Dance the helpless dance Into the arms of the abyss Water is calling you She awaits Deadly laughter echoes Through the haunted trees Spirits of the drowned Lure men with their song She awaits Dance the helpless dance Into the arms of the abyss Water is calling you She awaits
5.
The Double 04:27
Himself by himself Never alone Sorrow is concealed in gilded palaces There is no escape He met a stranger on the bridge In the sideways rain Made in his image Sent to take his place He sees but does not see The adversary Devils breed in still waters There is no escape He met a stranger on the bridge In the sideways rain Made in his image Sent to take his place
6.
The Portrait 07:41
Ready to raise the Devil An arrogant wreck on the boulevard Fame gives no pleasure to him who has stolen it The eyes of the painted man in the half light of the moon The sick one knew nothing Save vain desire and passions He grew unrecognized colorless and oh so cold The eyes of the painted man crept out of the frame All the purple and all the gold in the world Oh to sell a soul for it all No monster of ignorance Ever destroyed so much How could he forget the wretched portrait The eyes of the painted man an invocation of the damned All the purple and all the gold in the world Oh to sell a soul for it all Mercilessly wasted youth Magnificence and beauty extinguished All the purple and all the gold in the world Oh to sell a soul for it all
7.
Troika 02:29
Into the cold unknown Two wounded hearts setting out Through frozen beautiful snow A troika flies them home Beyond Moscow's dead souls Two weary minds make a new life Among the people A troika flies them home Into the cold unknown Is home
8.
Do you know who I am, he said with a smile I'm a friend of your father's late wife When you were a boy, innocent and weak I gave you a gift that would take all the pain away Too young to remember or just too weak The last December under the last Christmas tree

about

Black Magdalene's Winter Palace is a window to the decadence and desperation of Russia's Tsarist era. Illuminating both its magnificent cultural rise and tragic descent into the madness and despair of revolution, as seen through the eyes of Petersburg society, intelligentsia, mystics and serfs.

This sophomore album marks a slight stylistic departure in tone from previous releases revealing a more confident and mature Black Magdalene. Featuring a heavier, intense and introspective sound, Winter Palace depicts the luxury and longing of a beautifully conflicted empire.

“Dreaming the electric daydream, wide awake.”
-Alexander Blok
